Which was your best holiday?
I really enjoy going to South Africa and, in particular, Kruger National Park. I just like going on the game drives, the safaris, camping out in the bush. Being out in nature, to me that’s really special. I’ve had some great trips there when we have played South Africa on Australian cricket tours. It is still one of my favourite places to visit.

And the best hotel you’ve stayed in?
There’s a great hotel in Hobart, next to the Drunken Admiral Restaurant on Constitution Dock, called the Henry Jones Art Hotel. It’s an art centre. It is awesome. It has great rooms and a really warm feeling when you walk in. It is a great location to stay at. I really like Hobart – lots of fresh air.

What do you need for a perfect holiday?
A bunch of mates or family, my guitar and fishing rods. The people you travel with really make a difference and doing the things that you enjoy and relax you.

What do you always take with you?
My guitar and fishing rods are always in my luggage, even when I travel for work. Nothing better than having a bit of a jam at night and finding a bit of time to drop the line in. We were in Tasmania recently with the Sixers and a teammate and I dropped the line in for a few hours before the game. It’s a great way to spend the day and takes up a good amount of time when we don’t play until 7pm.

What is your best piece of travel advice?
Always pack your passport. I haven’t been unlucky enough to be caught out before but I can imagine it would be horrible to get to the airport without it. It’s always the first thing I throw in the bag.

Where would you like to go next?
I’m really looking forward to getting home, actually. It might sound silly but my favourite holiday destination is now home since I am away so much. There is nothing better than your own bed and your own surroundings.

Tell us about your worst holiday?
There is no such thing as a bad holiday in my books. Thankfully, I’ve never been on one.

And your worst experience on a holiday?
I stayed at a hotel in London back in the late ’90s and my room was so small that honestly I had to be either in the bed or in the bath because there was no space. My bags were literally on the windowsill as there was no room on the floor, the place was that small. It was horrible. Thankfully, I only stayed there once. Never again.

What’s the biggest packing mistake you’ve made?
Once on a cricket trip we had to travel in our team travel attire and we put our bags in to check-in earlier and I had packed all my team travel gear so I had nothing to wear apart from my jeans and a spare shirt. Not ideal when travelling with a cricket team and managers.

What do you avoid on holiday?
I try to avoid crowds, actually. I just try to get away from everything because, to me, being on holidays is about being with the people you care about, like friends and family, and I try to just enjoy some quality time with them. I don’t get to see them enough so when I do I like to make sure that I spend as much time with them as possible.

What do you dislike the most about holidays?
The thing I hate most about holidays is being at the airport and then hopping on the plane to come back. No one likes that feeling.
