Brett Lee cops chin music from Windies

Shivnarine Chanderpaul may have copped the knock on the head, but it was the man who delivered it - Brett Lee - who came in for treatment on Sunday.

The West Indian pace attack dished out an old-fashioned serving of pay back against the Australian quick in the first Test at Sabina Park after Lee floored Chanderpaul with his own bumper on Saturday.

Fidel Edwards was particularly hostile in launching a series of short balls - and intimidating stares - much to the delight of the home crowd.

Windies vice-captain Dwayne Bravo claimed the assault was more about shaking up Lee than any form of retribution.

Either way it worked, with Edwards soon after dismissing Lee for nine.

"That's the way cricket goes," said Bravo, who also gave a little chin music to Lee.

"When our lower order batters go into bat, Brett and the Australian fast bowlers will do the same.

"We've got the same ability, we've got bowlers bowling over 90mph as well, so therefore we know no matter who is batting, fast bowlers really like the short-pitched bowling. It's also a wicket-taking ball, and we use it as a wicket-taking delivery."

Chanderpaul did not take the field on Sunday, but will bat in the second innings after scans cleared him of any serious injury.

The 110-Test veteran said his whole body went numb after being struck on the back of the helmet by a Lee short ball which kept low.

Lee showed considerable concern for Chanderpaul's condition after the delivery, with the batsman eventually rising to his feet to complete one of the most courageous centuries of his career.
