Brett Lee conceded the most runs by an Australian bowler in a Test innings in 65 years as India smashed more than 200 runs off his bowling.
When India declared yesterday at 7-705 in its first innings of the fourth cricket Test against Australia at the Sydney Cricket Ground, Lee finished with 4-201, a couple of late wickets providing scant relief.
Only one Australian bowler has been more severely punished, with left-arm wrist spinner Chuck Fleetwood-Smith taking unflattering figures of 1-298 against England at the Oval in 1938.
In that match, England scored 7-903 and Fleetwood-Smith bowled an almost unimaginable 87 overs - or 522 balls.
Lee, in coughing up 201 runs, bowled 39.3 overs. Add in his 18 no-balls and he delivered 255 balls, less than half the number rolled down by Fleetwood-Smith.
Lee went for more than five runs an over, as V.V.S. Laxman (178) and Sachin Tendulkar (241 not out) were untroubled to dissect his bowling - accounting for more than half the runs the speedster gave up.
Laxman took 53 runs off Lee and Tendulkar hit him for 49.
Lee gave up 34 fours and a six for a total of 142 in boundaries.
