An ambitious ambidextrous aim

Brett Lee bowling left-arm. Adam Gilchrist batting right-handed. Ricky Ponting throwing left-handed. And all this happening in the next World Cup in 2007.

No, we have not been over-imbibing in our post-South Africa celebrations - such a vision comes from no less a source than Australia's coach, John Buchanan, who is convinced that, like footballers who kick with both feet and baseballers who swap sides, ambidextrous cricketers are a thing of the future.

Buchanan has unveiled his futuristic plan to London's Sun newspaper, insisting that such a move was essential if cricket was to move forward.

Said Buchanan: "We'll have players, hopefully by the next World Cup, who can use both sides of their bodies. So if they're left-handed, they will be able to use the right side of their body and vice versa."

Buchanan concedes that members of the present Australian side might not be the ones to be ambidextrous "but it's certainly something of the future, the next generation".

The Australian coach has already proved he is prepared to experiment, having hired Mike Young, who has coached the Australian Olympic baseball team, to improve his side's fielding in the World Cup.
