Allan Border: Brett, welcome to Inside Cricket. What an amazing weekend, you must still be on a high.
Brett: Absolutely yeah, to actually win a Test match like that and be a part of history is just a fantastic feeling and I am still on a high. I mean you can't wipe the smile off my face right now. You made your Test debut in last year's Boxing Day Test match, played in 7 of the 12 wins, and taken 42 wickets at an average of 16. Do you have to pinch yourself when you think about what you've achieved in the last 12 months? Yeah it's all happened so quickly and I've always dreamed of playing Test cricket since the age of 10 years old, and to actually one day wear the Baggy Green cap is a fantastic feeling. Things have happened so quickly over the last 12 months and I'm still on a bit of a rollercoaster ride right now, enjoy my cricket - playing some good cricket, and having a lot of fun.

Back to Perth - 2nd innings, during that 5 wickets, now you found yourself on a hat trick. Now talk us through the first couple of wickets, then the hat trick ball to Courtney Walsh. What was going through your mind then?
You knock over two in a row, you're feeling pretty confident coming in against Courtney Walsh when he's coming in defending against you - he's probably the best person to try and get a hat trick on. I think I was a little bit excited and trying to push the ball in a little bit too quickly and yeah, basically missed the stumps and he missed it, so I missed out on my hat trick. But that's cricket, it happens.

You look as though you're getting a bit of reverse swing on the ball, so the first two wickets - that's a beauty to Nixon McLean and then the superb one to Marlon Black. So you just get the ball to tail a little bit don't you?
I always feel confident when the ball tends to tail end, I mean generally with the brand new balls I try to bowl outswingers but then once the ball starts getting old again you just bring the ball back in, I find it works very well with the latest sort of order down there, I tend to knock them over.

Do you have anything in mind with Courtney coming out, I mean he charged Glenn McGrath's hat trick ball didn't he...
He didn't know what to expect!

...yeah so he's a bit like that, the way he plays.
Yeah he enjoys his cricket, he doesn't really regard himself as a batsman that much and that team is a fantastic order for cricket I think, and for him to actually come out and play a shot like that, I think just sums his game up - he enjoys himself.

Talking about hat tricks, Glenn McGrath's hat trick in Perth took him past the 300-wicket mark in Test cricket, talk us through your relationship with Glenn both on the field as a fast bowling partner, and off the field.
Glenn's been fantastic over the last 12 months he's taught me so much. I suppose I was a bit of a bowler who tended to bowl two sort of lengths, I was either bowling too short or too full over the past could of years, and since I've been hanging around Glenn and watching what he does I think he has improved my bowling because I can bowl a right line and length. He has taught me and shown that consistency gets wickets and he bowls a very good pace, and he bowls it at you the whole day. I've been trying to work on that with my bowling and it's certainly helped me.

I hope you're not picking up his bad habits, being a pest in the dressing room, etc.!
Well he does stir the boys up but I think it's part of him, I think it's good for the side!

Now do you envision yourself - 300 Test wickets, or just something way way in the future?
I mean I'm very happy to reach 40 Test wickets, I'm not looking too far ahead, I think in the next game I'll be trying to focus on getting the next wicket, that's just the way I look at things. I don't try to set myself five wickets a match or take 300 Test wickets, it's basically what happens day after day so I set myself real small goals and once I've achieved them I try to reassess and set myself these other goals again.

So that's the bowling side of things, what about the batting, just a couple of telling knocks in the first two Test matches, whacking fast bowlers back over the head for 6, that's a bit dangerous I reckon...
Yeah you just close your eyes and hit as hard as you can and see what comes off! But I have been doing some work with John Buchanan, our coach, and he has been helping me in the nets and spending a lot of time on my batting, but it's just something I enjoy doing - just watching the ball very closely and hopefully pick up a couple of runs.

We couldn't let you go without asking you about your other passion - your band Six & Out.
It's great fun, I mean guys like playing golf to relax, we like playing music and we find this is a very good thing - it takes our minds off cricket. During winter we play quite a few gigs around Sydney which was a fantastic experience. Something different because in cricket I think you feel quite comfortable with what you're doing, but when it comes to music you're just outside that square, so it's a little bit if-fy at first but once you put in the hard yards it does become OK. But with the band now we are trying to play some good music over the next couple of months and basically see what happens from there, but we're having a lot of fun and it's great to be part of the band.

Brett, congratulations on being part of Test cricket history in Perth, good luck for the rest of the year and thanks for your time today.
Thank you Allan, ta.
