Apr 22, 2010 LEE TO PLAY WITH BROKEN THUMB
Brett Lee has declared himself fit to play the World Twenty20 championship, beginning in little more than a week, despite a broken right thumb which forced him home from the Indian Premier League.

Recent injuries have left the veteran paceman no choice but to retire from Test cricket, however, he insists that his surgeon has cleared him to play without the need for an operation if he can deal with the pain.

"I've played with pain my whole life so a broken thumb won't worry me," claimed Lee, who bowled at Australia's training camp in Brisbane yesterday.

Apr 18, 2010 THE SPORTING GODS AMONG US...
In the main, Australians like to think of their sporting heroes as average, fallible, run-of-the-mill jokers.

However, this doesn't appear to cut the mustard with our cricketers, who live in a rarefied atmosphere created by the fact there are only 11 spots in the national team. This fact seems to elevate their achievements to a higher plane - despite the fact that the game itself is a colonial relic played by only a handful of nations. Which is where India comes in.

The land of a thousand gods, and its huge population, gives weight to cricket's place in world sport and also provides our veterans with a place where they can be suitably feted by millions of cricket tragics.

In Brett Lee's case, our picture proves just how quickly a humble boy from Wollongong can turn into a Indian deity. Having retired from his Test career with 310 wickets, Lee hopes to prolong his Twenty20 career with the Kings XI Punjab in the Indian Premier League.

Brett Lee, the Kings XI Punjab fast bowler, will miss the rest of the IPL and return to Australia after breaking his right thumb during the victory against Mumbai Indians on April 9. The latest setback jeopardises Lee's participation in the upcoming World Twenty20 tournament.

"It is unfortunate that Brett Lee has to leave the tournament due to a fractured thumb," said Kumar Sangakkara, the captain of Punjab, who said he hoped Lee would not miss the World Twenty20. "I hope not as we know he is a world-class performer and we would like him to be back fit soon."

Apr 13, 2010 AN ITEM? NO, JUST PREITY GOOD MATES
Brett Lee and his good friend Preity Zinta, the Bollywood actress who also owns Lee's Kings XI Punjab cricket team, looked at ease together at an IPL cricket party in India at the weekend.

In almost two years since Lee separated from his wife Liz Kemp, Lee, who won public sympathy after the ugly bust-up, has not once been linked to a woman.

Yesterday Lee's manager Neil Maxwell said that was not about to change. Lee's relationship with Zinta, he said, was strictly professional, adding that the pair had been friends for years.
