I am an English girl and had never really heard of Brett Lee before (scandalous, I know). But a couple of days after the first Lord's test match this Ashes series 2005, my dad (who is an umpire) was asked to umpire a charity cricket match, which the entire Australian cricket team generously agreed to attend. Of course, as soon as I found this out, I insisted that I must join my dad at this match.
As is typical of English weather, on the day of this cricket match the heavens decided to open, and it was pouring with rain. However, I still went in the vain hope that the Australians would also. I was waiting in the marquee when I saw a man enter who immediately caught my eye. At first I did not know who it was, so I asked my dad, and he told me that it was the one and only Brett Lee.
The weather persisted to rain, so the whole day was spent in a marquee drinking jugs of free Pimms with the Australian cricket team (what a shame!). I, thankfully, made a friend of the hired photographer and escorted him around with me, and I got my photo taken with Adam Gilchrist, Glenn McGrath and (of course) Brett Lee. The photographer printed the pictures off for me immediately, so I also got my pictures signed.
I would just like to add that, although I am an English girl so was obviously supporting England in the Ashes, I could not help but have a soft spot for the Australian cricket team (especially Brett). And although you lost the series it was only by a whisker (had you only scored just 2 more runs at Edgebaston!!!) and you played brilliantly throughout the series. I am a Brett Lee fan for life.
